8th cent. Slavs established a settlement on Castle Hill which they fortified with ramparts.

10th cent. A trading post and harbour were established below the ramparts.

967/972-11th cent. Szczecin was part of the Kingdom of Poland

1121-1181 Subject to the Polish King.

12th cent.-1637 Pomerania was an independent duchy ruled by the Gryffith Dynasty.

1124/25 First conversion to Christianity by Bishop Otto von Bamberg. St Peter's and Paul's church built next to the ramparts.

1184-1227 Pomerania under Danish control.

1187 St James' Church consecrated.

3.4.1243 The Duke Barnim I granted Szczecin its town charter

1249 The citizens of Szczecin forced Barnim I to pull down his stone palace. The Duke's residence was moved to D±bie.

April 1273 The Polish Prince Przemysław II married Duchess Ludgarda, the granddaughter of Barnim I (most probably it took place in the Duke's residence in D±bie).

1278 Szczecin becomes a Hansa Town.

1346 The first wing of the castle was built in the reign of Barnim III.

1478 The whole of Pomerania was united into a single duchy by Duke Bogusław X.

2.02.1491 Duke Bogusław X married Anna Jagiellonka, daughter of the Polsh King.

13.12.1534 Pomerania accepted the Reformation.

1630 - 1720 Szczecin under Swedish control.

10.03.1637 Death of Bogusław XIV, the last duke of the Gryffith Dynasty.

1720 Pomerania repurchased from Sweden by the Prussian king.

1724 - 40 Construction of Prussian fortifications with forts: Prussia, Wilhelm and Anhalt (Leopold).

1806 - 13 Szczecin occupied by Napoleonic forces.

15.08.1843 Opening of the first railway line (Szczecin-Berlin).

1845 King's permission for building the so-called New Town.

1873 City defences removed as the town expanded.

1898 Opening of the Duty Free Harbour in Łasztownia.

19/20th century Development of the harbour, the city and its cultural institutions.

1945 Szczecin becomes Polish.

11.06.1987 The Pope John Paul II visits Szczecin.

27.5.1990 First free election for the Szczecin Municipal Government.

April-Sept. 1993 - Celebration of the 750th anniversary of the town charter proclamation
